2024 CIES MESIG CALL FOR PAPERS

CIES2024 MENA SIG call for proposals
The Power of Protest
CIES2024 | Miami, FL | March 10-14
The Middle East/North Africa SIG invites you to submit a proposal for the 68th CIES annual conference. The CIES2024 conference theme The Power of Protest revolves around education as a public act and a matter of public concern on global and local levels. The theme aims to uncover the challenges, and inherent potentials of the power of protest, shedding light on the possibilities of opening new spaces for democratic engagement and social transformation. Research, ideas, and debates uncovering issues of injustices in terms of recognition, distribution, and representation within the education system come very timely, especially in our MENA region. Although these issues are common all over the globe, they deserve specific attention and investigation by MENA region researchers, educators, scholars, and practitioners to better understand and appreciate the different views around education and its transformational role. We look forward to receiving your proposals in response to the conference theme. Whether your work focuses on reform, policy, finance, teacher professional development, peace education, or teaching practices, the conference theme allows you to submit a proposal that ensures CIES continues to be an equitable and intellectually stimulating space.
Keywords: Middle East North Africa, Educational Reform, Educational Policy, Transformational Education, Democratic Engagement, Peace Education, Injustice, Inequality.

For CIES 2020, we encourage our members to submit proposals that address the conference theme, Education Beyond the Human, and to consider the following research questions:
- As the region experiences the effects of climate change with extreme heat lasting for longer periods, how can we as educational scholars, educators, and practitioners redefine our ‘usual’ ways of knowing and being in the world while also drawing on the region’s unique history, culture, and knowledge?
- By drawing on regional cases and pedagogical practices, how can comparative education bridge worldviews – and hence worlds – to turn divides into living contrasts that illuminate our everyday entanglements?
- By drawing on critical theories and stances (e.g., intersectionality, sociology of science and technology, discourse analysis, de/coloniality, and political economy), how can we interrupt the normative, business-as-usual frame in regional educational research and scholarship to respond to both the planetary and regional crisis?
- Which education policies, practices, and pedagogies that are emerging from the region and in the diaspora can help re-situate the human within the relational flow of life where everyone and everything are deeply interconnected?
